About Idaho

Idaho, one of the 50 states that make up the USA. Regarding overall area, it comes in at number 14 among the 50 states in the US. Its borders, which are formed by the American states of Montana and Wyoming to the east, Utah and Nevada to the south, Oregon and Washington to the west, and the Canadian province of British Columbia to the north, are both geographically and historically derived. Both lines—the northern one between the United States and Britain in 1846 and the southern one between the United States and Spain in 1819—were established by treaties. The border with British Columbia follows the 49th parallel of north latitude, while the border with Utah and Nevada follows the 42nd. While a tiny portion of Yellowstone National Park is included in the border with Wyoming, the boundary with Montana follows the Continental Divide. Except for the 480-mile (770-km) area between the Idaho communities of Weiser and Lewiston, where the Snake River’s Hells Canyon acts as a natural barrier, Idaho’s border with Oregon and Washington is a straight line. The state’s capital is Boise.

Idaho, which became the 43rd state of the union on July 3, 1890, is a member of the Mountain states but is frequently referred to as being in the Pacific Northwest, which is bounded to the east by the Continental Divide and is almost entirely submerged by the Columbia River drainage basin. The Shoshone phrase “jewel of the mountains” is supposed to be the source of the name Idaho.
