About Louisiana

Louisiana is an American state. Both natural and man-made boundaries separate it from its neighbors, Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, and Texas to the west. Towards the south is the Gulf of Mexico. Approximately 4,600 square miles (12,000 square kilometers) of Louisiana’s total area is comprised of inland waterways. Baton Rouge is the state capital.

Louisiana, admitted to the union in 1812 as the 18th state, previously controlled a strategically crucial region where the waters of the Mississippi-Missouri river system, which drains the heartland of North America, flow into the warm, northward-curving crescent of the Gulf of Mexico. Since 1682, when the explorer René-Robert Cavelier, sieur (lord) de La Salle planted a wooden cross and claimed the land in the name of Louis XIV of France, seven flags have flown over its borders. Numerous dimensions of the state’s social, political, and artistic existence are interwoven with the resulting cultural diversity.

Louisiana owes much of its complex personality to its geographical location, with portions of its land lying further south than any other portion of the continental United States except for southern Texas and the Florida peninsula, and with New Orleans, its largest city, located roughly on the same parallel as Cairo, New Delhi, and Shanghai. The subtropical climate of the state is responsible for the wonderful gloomy beauty of the coastal bayous, and the rich, fetid flora of its coastlines conceals a plenty of petroleum and natural gas. By 1860, Louisiana was a prosperous agricultural region, with sugarcane and cotton plantations prospering on its lush soil. At the start of the 20th century, there was a lumber boom, and following World War II, Louisiana saw tremendous industrialisation. The state is among the nation’s leaders in oil and gas production, and its mineral output is substantial.
