About Missouri

Missouri, one of the 50 states that make up the USA. Iowa is to the north, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee are to the east across the Mississippi River, Arkansas is to the south, and Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska are to the west. Missouri has more neighboring states than any other U.S. state, with the exception of Tennessee. The Missouri River, which divides the state in half, runs from Kansas City in the west through Jefferson City in the middle and just above St. Louis in the east, where it meets the Mississippi. The French named the river Missouri after the aboriginal population that called the region home during the era of European arrival, and the river, in turn, gave the state its name.

Missouri is influenced by warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico, cold air from Canada, and dry air from the southwest. Although winds may change throughout the year, they typically come from the south and southwest in the summer and the north and northwest in the winter. Around 35 inches (890 mm) of precipitation, which is typically plenty for crops, falls in the north and northwest and reaches over 50 inches (1,270 mm) in the extreme southeast. Its third falls between April and June. Heavy snowfall is uncommon; the most of it falls between December and February. Missouri averages roughly 25 twisters per year and is located in “Tornado Alley,” the region of greatest tornadic activity in the United States. When they occur, tornadoes may be exceptionally deadly and devastating, as in the case of the Joplin tornado in May 2011.
